How To Improve Your Memory

It is so common to hear people complain of how fast they tend to lose memory these days. Normally kids and the old would be forgiven as they are expected that their faculties are still developing in the case of kids or are too old as in the case of the older ones.

Unfortunately this has become a problem for people of all ages, even the youth whose memories are expected to be at their best. In some cases memory loss is due to a medical condition but in most other cases, it is not. There are several mind exercises one can improve his brain fitness without having to go into medication.

We cannot promise you that the simple mind exercises will turn your average memory into a photographic memory as that would be irrational, but I can say they will really improve your ability to remember things.

You have heard severally that wars are first won in the mind. The same case applies to memory. You have to convince yourself first that you have a good brain. There is no way you are going to be good with numbers or remembering names if you have already convinced yourself that you are poor when it comes to remembering them.

You must motivate yourself by celebrating the small things that your brain can remember. The other way to have sharp brain is to group your information together as opposed to trying to remember each piece on its own.

This is because large chunks of information are easier to remember than each small piece on its own. The best way is to categorize related objects into groups. Instead of saying cows goats sheep and horses, simply say domestic animals. It is easier to remember the grouping than each of the four individual animals.

Try to associate things you want to remember with things that you can remember effortlessly if you want to improve your brain fitness. The reason why we tend to forget phone numbers and addresses is because there is no relationship between the string of numbers and the person who owns the phone number.

That is why when introducing arithmetic to kids we don’t tell them to add three to five, instead we tell them to add three apples to two more, that way the figures have more meaning. Same kind of association improves memory even in adults. Everyone forgets after sometime no matter how sharp their brain might be.

This simply means that we too have to keep reminding our selves what we want to memorize. Failure to do this we will find that we have forgotten even what we thought was very obvious.

Naturally the brain tends to remember those things that have occurred in the recent past or those that have happened more repeatedly. For this reason you find that cramming only allows you to remember things for a very short while but you forget them almost immediately.

This is because whatever we cram is stored in our short term memories. Before you think of going for medication to boost your brain fitness, first try these simple ways.
